Don't some brands cause her to be that way because of 9/11 and the emotional connection she had to it?

Well, she has the allergy pre-9/11, but she loses her Dad in the attacks. We talked about it at the book club, and we're not sure if that's meant to be significant or if it's just a plot point that uses relatively current events.
Gibson does explicitly state that the proliferation of flags and patriotic symbols in NYC after the attacks doesn't cause her problems, which I think--considering the way he's framed the allergy at other times--is an interesting stand to take.
