It's the story and social aspect that are the immersion factor in WoW, and the design is based on that. Designers of other games put in artificial barriers to immersion due their mental masturbation over some cool technology or feature they must have the players see. Eliminate those barriers, punish the players enough so that they just want to do a "little better", and they will return.
