It's pretty much a fact of Japanese-game life that grinding and attack pattern memorizing are What The Kids Like. Also impenetrable menus.

The menus in this one really are awful. Not that they're deep, just really unintuitive.

Square did decent menus for a while. Which was probably good since that's where you spent most of the game. Then they started making progress systems based on organic chemistry or something, and the menu designers could only do so much.

RE5 has some of the most profoundly inexplicable menu design I've ever seen. Here's how you start a local co-op game: Click "New Game". Click "Solo campaign". Click "Start game". Go through the buy/sell/upgrade menu. Click "Start Game". Then, after the game is loaded and running, press Start on Controller #2. This will bring up a prompt asking if you want to Restart. Say Yes, and you will be in a co-op game.

What I can't figure out is whether Japanese people think these systems make perfect sense and don't understand why the gajin are so dumb, or whether Japanese designers just don't have the interest in UI design that Western companies have.
