Me and my art-film-geek friends here in NYC had quite a field day when we heard there was going to be (as we kept saying in increasingly upward-slanting voices) "a video game based on a fucking Tarkovsky movie!"

This did lead to the following e-mail, courtesy of my pal at Gemini CollisionWorks (who has a very good blog of his own at http://collisionwork.livejournal.com/ ):

COMING SOON! From TarkovskyDigital!

Andrei Rublev -- THE GAME!

Cast the bell, paint the icon, then try to escape in the hot-air balloon!

VIRTUAL NOSTALGHIA!

Read poetry! Watch rain fall! Walk across an empty pool and try to keep the
candle lit!

FIRST PERSON SACRIFICE!

Fight your family and set your house on fire to save the world!

From the designers of DreyerOn-Line and SimBresson!

And the more I think of it, the more I want . . .

LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD FIRST-PERSON SHOOTER!

". . . concentric conundrums of Fate . . . here in these empty halls, in this
deserted hotel . . . the silent statues . . . these empty halls . . . a leaf
that falls . . . two . . . three . . . four . . . here in this grand hotel . .
.

"DIE YOU BASTARDS!!!"

". . . as we pass through this deserted hotel . . . the marble floors . . .
concentric conundrums of Fate . . . dust motes in the sunlight . . . the wind
wheezing through the pipes of the unplayed organ . . . the silent statues . . .
the mirrors reflecting each other . . . terra cotta . . .

"SCREW YOU AND YOUR STUPID GAME WITH THE MATCHES!!!"

" . . . these empty mirrors . . . the wind against the doors . . . concentric
conumdrums of Fate . . ."

You are referencing stuff that is so far over my head right now.

I'm still vague on what a stompbox actually is, so that makes us even.

But "Last Year at Marienbad" is an awesome, awesome movie.

I'll check it out. Surprisingly, it's not on Netflix. And lord knows it won't be at any video stores around here. I'll have to see if I can find it for less than the $132 asking price on Amazon.

You don't know what a stompbox is, and you're still reading? I'm never going to get rid of all my readers at this rate.

Hunh---I am sort of surprised it's not on Netflix. But very sad to hear it's once again out of print---a movie that influential (The Shining borrows from it heavily) really deserves better reception.

And hey, I was drawn here by the Electroplankton posts, and I don't even know quite what an octave *is* (it's got something to do with, um, low and high?). Yet thanks to GarageBand, I just composed my first film score. Computers are wonderful.
