I remember when you bought the R-09 and recorded the protesters. I've been meaning to ask how that's working out. I'd love to pick one up, but the price tag is a bit steep for me.

It seemed high to me too, at the time, but I figured it would be handy to have. I think it's worked out pretty well. I haven't used it as much personally as I'd like, but it's been used heavily by at least a couple of people, and I value anything that builds relationships with the rest of the newsroom.
I wouldn't recommend it unless you already have a DAW and some other audio equipment, though. Ironically, having spent a bundle on other audio equipment makes a field recorder a better value proposition, I think. It fills in a niche. But if you're starting from near scratch, that's not the niche that probably needs addressing first.
